Visiting Tunis in October
# Tunis in October: What It’s Actually Like
October is genuinely one of the better times to show up in Tunis, and I say that as someone who’s sweated through a July visit and sworn never again.
The heat backs off meaningfully compared to summer. You’re typically looking at highs around 25-28°C earlier in the month, dropping a few degrees by the end of October. That’s the sweet spot where you can actually walk the Medina for three hours without feeling like you’re being slowly cooked. The evenings get properly pleasant – light jacket territory by late October, which feels almost miraculous after the brutal summer months.
Rainfall is where things get a little unpredictable. October marks the beginning of Tunisia’s wetter season, so you’re not getting the bone-dry certainty of August. You might get a perfect two weeks, or you might catch a few rainy afternoons. It’s not monsoon-level drama, but pack something waterproof and don’t plan outdoor activities as if rain is impossible.
Crowds are noticeably lighter than summer, and the tourist infrastructure feels more relaxed for it. The Medina, Bardo Museum, and Carthage are all fully operational and you won’t be fighting through tour groups at every turn. Restaurant staff have time to actually talk to you. That matters more than people expect.
Is it worth visiting? For most people, honestly yes. If you want hot beach weather, you’re probably a month too late. But if you’re there for the history, the food, wandering the souks without a heatstroke, and getting a more authentic feel for the city rather than the resort version of Tunisia – October delivers. It suits curious independent travelers more than package tourists.
**One practical tip:** The Medina gets confusing fast and offline maps don’t always capture the alleyways accurately. Download Maps.me before you go and save the Medina area while you have wifi. It handles the narrow backstreets better than Google Maps and works without data. You’ll use it constantly.
