# Ulcinj in May: Honest Notes
May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Ulcinj, and I’d say that without much hesitation. The crowds that descend through July and August simply haven’t arrived yet, which means you can actually walk along Mala Plaža or wander the Old Town without negotiating through a wall of sunburned tourists. The town feels like it belongs to itself still.
Temperature-wise, 20-21°C is comfortable rather than spectacular. You can absolutely sit outside for coffee or lunch without a jacket, and the evenings are warm enough to feel properly Mediterranean. Don’t expect beach weather by most people’s standards though. The Adriatic is still pretty cold in May, hovering around 18-19°C, so swimming is doable if you’re the type who finds this refreshing rather than miserable. Most people aren’t, honestly.
That 20mm of rain across the month sounds manageable, and it mostly is. It tends to arrive in short, decisive bursts rather than grinding grey drizzle, so you’ll likely get a couple of slightly disrupted afternoons rather than a ruined trip. Pack a light layer and something waterproof and don’t stress about it.
What’s open is a legitimate question for Ulcinj specifically. By May, the main restaurants and cafes around Mala Plaža are operating, the Old Town has its bars and small shops functioning, and you can access Long Beach without feeling like you’ve stumbled onto an abandoned film set. However, some of the more seasonal beach bars and facilities are still finding their feet, so don’t expect everything firing on full cylinders.
This is genuinely ideal for anyone who wants atmosphere without chaos – couples, slower travellers, people who prefer conversation over thumping music. It’s not the month for people who need a buzzing nightlife scene or full beach infrastructure to feel they’re having a holiday.
**Practical tip:** Accommodation prices drop noticeably compared to July, but availability can still tighten around weekends in late May as Montenegrin and Albanian visitors start arriving for short breaks. Book at least two or three weeks ahead if you have specific dates in mind.
