# Ulcinj in October: The Honest Version

By October, Ulcinj has exhaled. The summer circus – and this place genuinely gets chaotic in July and August – has packed up and headed home, and what’s left is actually a pretty compelling version of this scrappy Albanian-flavoured Montenegrin town.

The weather sits around 17 degrees, which sounds fine on paper and mostly is. You’ll have genuinely warm afternoons where sitting outside with coffee feels completely natural, but mornings and evenings have a real bite to them. Pack layers you mean it about. The 45mm of rain across the month isn’t torrential, but you’ll almost certainly catch at least one grey, drizzly day where the old town looks atmospheric if you’re being romantic about it, or just a bit bleak if you’re not.

The crowds are essentially gone. Long Beach, that enormous sandy stretch that becomes a sardine tin in summer, is practically yours. Walking it in October with almost nobody around feels genuinely special – the scale of it hits differently without 50,000 sunbeds in the way. The old town above the sea is quiet enough to actually look at the Ottoman architecture without navigating through tour groups.

Here’s the catch though: Ulcinj isn’t great at the shoulder season infrastructure thing. A noticeable chunk of restaurants shutter after September, some hotels close entirely, and the town can feel slightly suspended between versions of itself. You won’t starve or struggle to find a bed, but don’t arrive expecting full summer choice.

It’s genuinely worth visiting in October for people who care more about place than facilities – photographers, slow travellers, anyone who finds beach towns more interesting when they’re not performing. Couples do well here. Families with young kids expecting activities and beach entertainment, less so.

**Practical tip:** Don’t assume the border crossing at Sukobin into Albania is straightforward to research online – information is patchy. If you’re planning a day trip into Shkodër, ask your accommodation the evening before about current wait times. It varies wildly and can eat your whole morning.
