# Vilamoura in March: What It’s Actually Like
Look, March in Vilamoura is a bit of a gamble, and anyone telling you otherwise is trying to sell you something.
The weather is genuinely unpredictable. You might land to brilliant sunshine and 18°C, spend three days on the marina eating grilled fish in a light jacket, and feel like an absolute genius for discovering shoulder season. Or you could get a week of grey skies, Atlantic wind, and enough rain to make you question every decision you’ve ever made. Both scenarios are completely real, and there’s no way to know which one you’re booking into.
**What the place is actually like**
In March, Vilamoura is quiet. Properly quiet. The marina looks beautiful but half the restaurants are still shuttered, the beach bars are mostly locked up, and that buzzy summer atmosphere is months away. What you get instead is a relaxed, slightly sleepy resort town that’s genuinely pleasant if you adjust your expectations accordingly.
The golf courses are fully open and in excellent condition, which is honestly the main reason to come this time of year. Serious golfers come specifically for March – courses are green, tee times are easy to get, and prices are lower than peak season.
**Who should actually come**
Golfers, absolutely. Couples wanting a quiet city break with good restaurants and coastal walks without fighting through crowds. Anyone who genuinely enjoys off-season travel and doesn’t need guaranteed beach weather to have a good time.
If you need guaranteed sunshine, pool weather, or a lively nightlife scene, wait until May or June. You’ll be much happier.
The marina restaurants that are open tend to be good, less rushed, and occasionally better value. The old town of Faro is just 20 minutes away and worth a day trip.
**One practical tip**
Pack for both outcomes. Genuinely. Bring a waterproof layer and something warm for evenings, but also your swimwear – a warm spell can appear from nowhere and you’ll feel absurd sitting by a pool in jeans because you refused to believe it.
