Visiting Vlore in May

# Vlore in May: Worth the Trip?

May is honestly one of the better times to consider Vlore, but let me be straight with you rather than just cheerleading.

The weather sits in that genuinely pleasant middle ground – warm enough that you’re comfortable wandering around in a t-shirt during the day, probably somewhere in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, but without the suffocating heat that July and August bring to this part of Albania. Evenings stay mild enough to sit outside with a beer without reaching for a jacket every five minutes. Rainfall is a bit unpredictable – May can throw occasional showers at you, sometimes a few days in a row, sometimes nothing for the whole month. Pack a light layer you don’t mind getting damp.

The sea is swimmable for some people in May, genuinely not for others. Think somewhere around 20-22 degrees water temperature. If you’re the type who swims in Scotland without flinching, you’ll be fine. If you need bath-warm water, you might just be paddling.

Crowd-wise, this is still solidly shoulder season. The restaurants along the waterfront are open and functioning properly, the boats out to Karaburun Peninsula and Sazan Island are running, and you’ll actually get a table without planning your entire day around it. The town feels like a real place rather than a temporary resort. Locals significantly outnumber tourists.

Is it worth visiting then? Yes, genuinely – especially if you want to do hiking, explore the Karaburun-Sazan Marine Park, or actually have a conversation with someone at a restaurant rather than competing with a hundred other visitors. It suits curious travellers, walkers, and people who find peak-season beach resorts exhausting.

The practical tip that actually matters: confirm boat tour departures directly with operators a day ahead. May schedules aren’t always fixed and some run on demand rather than daily timetables. Showing up at the harbour assuming something departs at nine can waste a full morning you could have spent somewhere spectacular.
