Where to Stay in Athens
Athens is one of those cities where location genuinely makes or breaks your trip, and with crowds at peak levels, getting this right matters more than ever.
The best area for most mid-range travelers is Monastiraki and Psiri. You’re within walking distance of the Acropolis, surrounded by good restaurants, and the metro connectivity means you can reach Piraeus for island ferries without a taxi. Hotels here in the mid-range bracket, roughly 80 to 150 euros per night, are plentiful and reasonably comfortable. Expect boutique spots with rooftop bars and decent air conditioning, both of which you absolutely need in summer. Koukaki, just south of the Acropolis, has become a strong alternative over the past few years. It’s slightly quieter, more residential in feel, and tends to offer better value for the same price point. Locals actually live and eat there, which makes a real difference.
Avoid Omonia Square entirely if you can. It’s been in a difficult state for years and despite ongoing efforts to clean it up, it remains uncomfortable, particularly at night. The savings from staying there are not worth the trade-off. Glyfada, the coastal suburb, sounds appealing but puts you 45 minutes from everything you came to see, and the commute wears thin quickly.
For mid-range budgets specifically, prioritize hotels over apartments unless you’re staying a week or longer. The better mid-range hotels include breakfast, which genuinely saves money given Athens food prices. Look for places with rooftop access because the Acropolis views at sunset are legitimately one of the great free experiences the city offers.
The booking mistake people make constantly is reserving hotels in the center without checking for pedestrian-only streets nearby. Athens has many of them, and showing up with luggage only to discover your taxi cannot reach the front door, while you’re exhausted from a long flight in 35-degree heat, is a genuinely miserable start to a trip. Always check the last hundred meters of your route before you arrive. Google Street View exists for exactly this reason.
