Where to Stay in Hvar
Where to Stay in Hvar
Hvar town is the obvious base and for good reason. The main square, Pjaca, puts you within walking distance of the ferry port, the best restaurants, and the hilltop fortress with its sweeping Adriatic views. Mid-range travelers will find decent options here in the form of small family-run guesthouses and boutique apartments tucked into the old stone lanes above the waterfront. Expect to pay somewhere between 100 and 180 euros per night in peak summer for something clean, well-located, and reasonably comfortable without the eye-watering prices of the waterfront hotels. Book anything with air conditioning as a non-negotiable because Hvar summers are genuinely brutal.
Stari Grad, on the other side of the island, is worth considering if you want a slower pace without sacrificing charm. It has a beautiful old harbor, fewer party crowds, and slightly better value for money. Ferries from Split arrive here rather than Hvar town, which makes logistics easier and cheaper. The trade-off is that you will need a car or bus to reach the beaches and nightlife that most people come to Hvar for.
Avoid booking accommodation directly on the Riva, the main waterfront promenade in Hvar town. The noise from bars and boat parties continues well past 3am during high season and no amount of earplugs will fully solve that problem. Properties one or two streets back are significantly quieter and usually cheaper.
The single most common booking mistake people make in Hvar is leaving it too late. Unlike many destinations where last-minute deals appear, Hvar in July and August rewards early planners completely. Properties that seem overpriced in March are completely sold out by June, forcing late bookers into genuinely bad options at even worse prices.
For mid-range travelers, apartments with kitchens are a smart financial move because eating out every meal in Hvar town adds up fast. Self-catering breakfast and the occasional dinner at home keeps the overall trip cost manageable without sacrificing the experience of being in one of the Mediterranean’s most genuinely beautiful places.
