Where to Stay in Kefalonia
Kefalonia rewards visitors who take a little time to figure out where to base themselves, because the island is large and the character of each area differs considerably. For mid-range travelers, the sweet spot tends to be around Fiscardo in the north or the Lassi peninsula near Argostoli, depending on what you want from your trip.
Fiscardo is arguably the most charming base on the island. It’s a small Venetian harbour village that survived the 1953 earthquake largely intact, giving it a genuine atmosphere that purpose-built resort areas simply can’t replicate. Mid-range hotels and boutique guesthouses here typically run between 80 and 140 euros per night in peak season, and you’re walking distance from decent restaurants and clear water. The crowd level is manageable if you avoid August, when Italians and Greeks arrive in force and prices climb sharply.
Lassi suits people who want convenience over character. It sits just outside Argostoli, the capital, and offers good-value apartments and small hotels with easy access to supermarkets, restaurants, and transport links. It’s not particularly pretty, but it works well as a practical base, especially if you plan to rent a car and explore. Avoid the strip closest to the main beach road, which gets noisy at night and attracts a younger, louder crowd than most mid-range travelers are looking for.
Skala on the southern tip is worth considering if you want a beach-focused stay without paying Fiscardo prices. It’s quieter than Lassi, has a pleasant sandy beach, and offers solid value apartments. The downside is the distance from other parts of the island makes day trips longer.
The booking mistake people consistently make in Kefalonia is reserving accommodation without checking whether they need a car to reach it. Many beautifully reviewed properties are essentially inaccessible without your own transport, and car rental on Kefalonia is not cheap. If you’re not renting a vehicle, stick to Argostoli or Fiscardo where everything is genuinely walkable. Booking a hillside villa thinking taxis will cover it comfortably is an expensive lesson many visitors learn the hard way.
