Where to Stay in Skopelos
Where to Stay in Skopelos
Skopelos is a small island, which means your accommodation choice is less about neighborhood boundaries and more about whether you want village charm, beach access, or a bit of both. For mid-range travelers, the two main bases are Skopelos Town and Glossa, with most visitors correctly choosing Skopelos Town as their anchor.
Skopelos Town, the main port, gives you the best combination of convenience and atmosphere. The whitewashed houses climbing the hillside, the waterfront tavernas, and the easy access to ferry connections make it the obvious choice. Mid-range hotels and guesthouses here typically run between 70 and 120 euros per night in peak season, and you get genuine character rather than resort anonymity. Look for places slightly up the hill rather than directly on the harbor front, where you get better views, quieter nights, and often lower prices. The walk down takes five minutes.
Glossa, the island’s second village in the north, suits travelers who want genuine local life with fewer tourists. It’s quieter, cooler, and genuinely beautiful, but you’ll need a car or scooter to explore beaches and you’ll miss the energy of the main town after dark. It works well for a night or two if you’re island-hopping slowly, but not as a full-week base unless solitude is your priority.
Avoid booking anything described as beachfront around Milia or Panormos beaches unless you specifically want beach isolation. You’ll be far from everything else and dependent on transport for every meal.
Budget travelers can find simple rooms and small family-run pensions in Skopelos Town’s back streets for around 50 to 65 euros, often with excellent hospitality that larger hotels can’t match. Splurge-level travelers should look at the boutique conversions in the old town, some genuinely stunning.
The booking mistake people consistently make is waiting too long. Skopelos has limited quality accommodation and the island’s profile rose significantly after Mamma Mia filmed here. August bookings in decent places disappear by March. Book early, confirm directly with the property when possible, and don’t assume availability will materialise last minute.
