Sousse is a solid choice for budget travelers, and the good news is that cheap sleep options are genuinely decent here if you know where to look. The medina is the obvious starting point for anyone watching their wallet. Small family-run hotels and guesthouses cluster around the old city walls, typically charging between 30 and 60 Tunisian dinars per night for a clean room with a fan or basic air conditioning. You get character, easy walking access to the souks, and breakfast sometimes thrown in. The trade-off is noise, particularly on weekends when local foot traffic picks up well into the night. Bring earplugs and you will be fine.

Port El Kantaoui, the purpose-built resort strip about eight kilometres north, is worth skipping entirely if budget is the priority. Everything costs more there, the atmosphere is artificial, and you end up paying a taxi fare every time you want anything authentic. It caters to package tourists and the pricing reflects that.

The area around Boulevard de la Corniche offers a middle ground. A handful of smaller hotels sit within walking distance of the beach without the full resort markup. These work well for budget travelers who want beach access but are not obsessed with having a pool. Rooms here often run slightly higher than the medina but the tradeoff in convenience can be worth it during summer when heat inside the old city gets oppressive.

For the tightest budgets, look at hostels in the medina that have opened in recent years targeting backpackers. Dorm beds exist, they are not always advertised prominently online, and asking directly often gets better rates than booking platforms.

The one booking mistake people consistently make is reserving non-refundable rooms during Ramadan without checking the dates first. Restaurants close during daylight hours, the social atmosphere shifts significantly, and if your trip revolves around evening street food and late café culture, you might find the timing frustrating. The dates move each year, so check before you commit to anything locked in. A little timing awareness saves real disappointment.
