Where to Stay in Tenerife
Tenerife is one of Europe’s most visited islands, which means accommodation fills up fast and prices can be unforgiving if you leave things too late. For mid-range travelers, the sweet spot sits somewhere between the soulless mega-resort strips and the overpriced boutique hotels that charge a premium simply for having exposed brick walls.
The south of the island, particularly Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos, is where most tourists end up, and honestly it makes sense. The weather is reliably sunny, beaches are close, and the infrastructure is excellent. Costa Adeje leans slightly more upscale, offering cleaner streets and better restaurant options without dramatically higher prices. Los Cristianos has more local character and tends to be a touch cheaper. Both work well for mid-range budgets, where you can comfortably find a decent apartment or three-star hotel with a pool for around 80 to 130 euros per night depending on season.
Puerto de la Cruz in the north is underrated and genuinely worth considering. It has a real town feel, authentic Spanish restaurants, and the dramatic Lago Martianez lido. It rains a little more but the trade-off is character, lower prices, and far fewer stag parties.
Avoid the cheapest end of Playa de las Américas. It can be noisy until 4am and the value rarely matches what you actually get. Budget travelers chasing rock-bottom prices there often end up worse off than spending slightly more in a quieter location.
For budget travelers, self-catering apartments in Los Cristianos represent the best value. For mid-range, aim for aparthotels in Costa Adeje with kitchen access so you can avoid eating out every single meal. At the higher end, the area around Fañabé and Torviscas in Costa Adeje has genuinely good hotels without tipping into Abama-level luxury pricing.
The biggest booking mistake people make is reserving non-refundable rates months in advance to lock in low prices, then getting caught out by flight changes or travel disruptions. Tenerife runs at high capacity year-round, so the price difference between flexible and non-refundable rates is rarely dramatic enough to justify the risk.
