Where to Stay in Toulon

Toulon doesn’t get nearly the tourist traffic of Nice or Marseille, which works heavily in your favor when hunting for affordable accommodation. The city has genuine neighborhoods where real people live, and that keeps prices honest year-round.

The best area to base yourself on a budget is around the old port, known as the Vieux Port, and the streets immediately north of it. You’re walking distance from the market, the waterfront, and the ferry terminals without paying coastal premium prices. Small family-run hotels here often charge between 50 and 80 euros per night, and the neighborhood has enough cafes and boulangeries that you won’t feel stranded. The Mourillon district, slightly east along the coast, is another strong choice. It’s calmer, residential, and has a pleasant beach. Budget guesthouses and affordable rentals appear regularly here, and locals actually spend time in this area rather than just tourists.

Avoid staying near the train station unless you have a very early departure. The streets around Toulon’s central station have a reputation for being rough after dark, and the accommodation quality in that zone tends to be poor for the price. It’s not worth the stress or the safety trade-off, particularly for solo travelers.

For genuine budget travelers, short-term apartment rentals through standard platforms frequently undercut hotels significantly. A studio in Mourillon or near the old town can run 40 to 60 euros per night, especially outside July and August. If you’re staying more than three nights, always message hosts directly and ask about weekly rates. Most will negotiate quietly.

Mid-range budget travelers willing to spend 80 to 100 euros have real options at newer boutique hotels near the Arsenal area, which is clean, safe, and walkable.

The booking mistake people consistently make in Toulon is assuming they need to book months ahead. Because tourist crowds stay low compared to neighboring cities, last-minute bookings of two to four days out often unlock better prices as properties try to fill remaining rooms. Don’t lock yourself into expensive early reservations when flexibility rewards you here.
