# Paros in May: Pretty Much the Sweet Spot
Look, if someone asked me when to visit Paros, May would be the first thing out of my mouth. Not August, when half of Athens descends on the island and you’re paying absurd money to feel like you’re on a crowded bus that happens to have a sea view.
May sits in this genuinely pleasant middle ground. Temperatures hover around 24°C, which means you can actually walk around Parikia or Naoussa in the afternoon without dissolving. The water is still a bit fresh for serious swimming – most people find it bracingly cold rather than refreshing – but the beaches are yours to enjoy without negotiating for towel space. That 20mm of rain sounds concerning but it really isn’t. You might get one grey afternoon, maybe two. Pack a light layer and forget about it.
The island is awake but not overwhelmed. Restaurants are open, beach bars are setting up, the ferry connections are running properly. You’re not arriving to find half the tavernas still shuttered with hand-written notes about opening in June. The locals are in a decent mood because the season is starting but they’re not yet exhausted by it.
Naoussa is particularly lovely in May. The harbour feels like it belongs to you in a way it absolutely won’t in July. You can get a table at good restaurants without planning your evening around it three days in advance.
Is it worth it? Genuinely yes, especially for anyone who prefers atmosphere over a guaranteed scorching beach holiday. Couples, solo travellers, people who want to actually explore the island – the marble villages, the Byzantine road, the quieter western coast – will love it. Families chasing pure beach time might find the water temperature frustrating.
**One practical tip:** rent a scooter or small car early in your stay, not later. May availability is fine, but the good rental places still fill up on busy weekends once the Greek public holidays kick in, and you really do need wheels to see the best of this island.
