# Heraklion in April: The Honest Version

April is genuinely one of the better times to visit Heraklion, and I say that as someone who’s also been there in August and spent three days feeling like a rotisserie chicken.

**What the weather actually feels like**

Twenty degrees sounds perfect on paper, and mostly it is. You’ll have warm, genuinely pleasant days where a light jacket feels excessive by noon. But that 30mm of rain has to land somewhere, and it tends to arrive as proper showers rather than a polite drizzle — sometimes a full grey day, sometimes a dramatic afternoon downpour that clears within an hour. Pack a layer and a small umbrella, accept that one day might be a write-off, and you’ll be fine.

**The crowds situation**

This is the real reason to come in April. Knossos in August is a slow-moving, sun-baked queue of misery. In April you can actually stand in front of something and think about it. The city itself — the Venetian harbour, the market street, the Archaeological Museum — feels like it belongs to people who live there rather than people photographing it. Easter week is the exception. Greek Easter (dates vary) brings domestic tourists and a genuinely electric atmosphere, but also booked-out accommodation. Either lean into it or plan around it.

**What’s open**

Almost everything. The Archaeological Museum is fully operational, Knossos is open, restaurants are running normal hours. Some beach clubs and resort-style spots outside the city haven’t fully woken up yet, but you’re probably not here for those.

**Is it worth it and for whom**

Yes, particularly if you care about history, food, or just wandering without being herded. Families with school-age kids will find it relaxed and manageable. Solo travellers and couples do well here. Beach holiday seekers should wait until June — the sea is still cold.

**One practical tip**

Book your Knossos tickets online before you arrive. The site has timed entry now, and even in April the morning slots fill up faster than you’d expect.
