# Chania in May: Warm, Green, and Just Before the Chaos
May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Chania, and I’ll tell you why without trying to sell you a holiday package.
The weather sits around 25°C, which sounds perfect on paper and mostly is in practice. You’ll get warm, sunny days that are absolutely ideal for walking the Venetian harbour without sweating through your shirt by 10am. There’s still some rain – roughly 20mm across the month, usually arriving as short afternoon showers rather than anything that ruins a whole day. Pack a light jacket and don’t stress about it.
What May actually feels like is this: the island has woken up but hasn’t lost its mind yet. The crowds that turn the Old Town into a slow-moving queue of sunburned humans arrive properly in June and peak brutally in July and August. In May, you can walk the harbour in the evening and still feel like you’re somewhere real. Restaurants are open, tavernas are staffed, boat trips are running, and the Samaria Gorge – one of the main reasons people come here – is typically open by early May after its winter closure.
The landscape deserves a mention too. Crete in May is genuinely beautiful in a way it isn’t in August when everything looks scorched. The hills around Chania are still green, wildflowers are hanging on, and the light is extraordinary without being punishing.
Who is May perfect for? Couples, solo travellers, anyone who wants to actually enjoy food and conversation rather than queue for a table. Families work well too – the sea is around 20-21°C, which honest adults will describe as refreshing and children will run straight into.
Who might struggle? Anyone chasing a pure beach holiday with guaranteed wall-to-wall heat. Some beach clubs are still gearing up, and evenings can feel cool enough to want that layer.
**Practical tip:** Book the Samaria Gorge trek in advance. It fills up faster than people expect, even in shoulder season, and you don’t want to have travelled this far and missed it.
