Visiting Silves in May
Visiting Silves in May
# Silves in May
Honestly, May is one of those months where the Algarve starts to remember it’s a tourist destination, and Silves sits in that interesting middle ground of “discovered but not yet overwhelmed.”
The weather is genuinely lovely most of the time. Temperatures typically sit somewhere in the low-to-mid twenties, warm enough to feel like proper summer if you’re arriving from northern Europe, but without the punishing heat that July and August bring to this inland town. And Silves does get hot in peak summer, noticeably hotter than the coastal resorts because you’re away from any sea breeze. In May you mostly dodge that problem. Rain is possible, particularly earlier in the month, but we’re not talking persistent grey drizzle. It’s more likely a day here and there, and then it’s done.
Crowds are manageable. This isn’t a ghost town situation, the castle gets visitors and the restaurants near the riverside are busy on weekends, but you can actually walk around without feeling herded. You’ll get photographs of the red sandstone castle without strangers permanently in the frame. That changes dramatically from June onwards.
Everything is open. The castle, the cathedral, the municipal museum, the restaurants along the river. The orange groves around town look genuinely beautiful in late spring, which is something the postcard version of Silves actually delivers on in person.
Worth visiting? If you want the real character of the place rather than a beach-adjacent day trip ticked off a list, yes absolutely. Silves rewards people who slow down, eat lunch somewhere, maybe pick up cheap local ceramics, walk the castle walls without rushing. It suits independent travellers, anyone who finds the coast a bit relentless, couples, older visitors who appreciate being able to actually hear each other in a restaurant.
It’s less exciting if you’re travelling with young children who need a beach every day or you’re hoping for buzzy nightlife.
**Practical tip:** Drive or get a taxi from Lagos or Portimão. The train station sits a genuinely awkward distance from the town centre and the connection timing is unreliable.
