Where to Stay in Hydra
Where to Stay in Hydra
Hydra is one of those rare Greek islands that hasn’t been swallowed by mass tourism, partly because there are no cars or motorbikes allowed. Getting around means walking, donkeys, or water taxis, which shapes where you stay more than almost anywhere else in Greece.
The port town itself is where most accommodation sits, and for mid-range travelers it makes the most sense. You’re within walking distance of restaurants, the ferry dock, and the main beaches without paying the premium that comes with the very front-row harbor-view rooms. Streets climbing up from the port toward the residential neighborhoods above offer better value than properties right on the waterfront, and the five-minute walk downhill is genuinely easy. These quieter uphill spots also mean you’re not dealing with late-night noise from harbor bars in summer.
The western side of the port, toward Kamini, is worth considering if you want a slightly more local feel. It’s a fifteen-minute walk from the main ferry landing, which feels like nothing once you’re settled, and small guesthouses there tend to charge less than equivalent rooms overlooking the main harbor. Kamini itself has a tiny swimming spot and a couple of good tavernas that don’t cater exclusively to day-trippers.
Avoid anything marketed heavily as a “luxury villa rental” if you’re mid-range budgeting. Hydra has seen a surge in high-end boutique hotels that look reasonable online but charge aggressively for the name. Read reviews carefully for what the walk actually involves, because some properties are significantly steeper than photos suggest, and arriving with luggage up a forty-five degree cobblestone path is a real situation.
The booking mistake people consistently make is underestimating the luggage problem. Hydra has porters with donkeys who carry bags from the port, but this costs extra and isn’t always obvious to arrange in advance. Contact your accommodation before arrival and ask specifically about luggage transfer. Most mid-range guesthouses either arrange this for you or have simple instructions. Skipping that conversation leads to a genuinely exhausting arrival that colors the first day badly.
