**The beaches are the real deal.** Porto Katsiki is legitimately one of the most dramatic cliff beaches in the Mediterranean. The turquoise colour of that water isn’t a filter — it’s actually like that. However, getting down to the beach involves steep steps, it gets absolutely rammed in peak season, and you’ll be sharing the experience with several hundred other people who’ve also seen it on Instagram. Go early morning or late afternoon, or you’ll spend more time parking than swimming.
Egremni is the wilder, harder-to-reach cousin, and honestly it rewards the effort. The road down is rough and the beach has no facilities, but the payoff is real seclusion. Most people don’t bother, which is exactly why you should.
**The watersports scene is genuinely excellent.** Vassiliki is world-renowned for windsurfing for good reason — the afternoon thermal winds are remarkably consistent, and the setup there is professional without being pretentious. If you don’t windsurf, you’ll probably find Vassiliki a bit of a one-trick town. The lagoon kite-surfing at Agios Ioannis is similarly impressive, with flat water conditions that instructors genuinely love.
**Where it disappoints** is the main town of Lefkada itself. It’s pleasant enough, but it lacks the charm of somewhere like Nafplio or even the better Ionian island capitals. The restaurant quality is inconsistent, prices have risen sharply with tourism demand, and parts of the west coast road are genuinely exhausting to drive — narrow, busy, and requiring serious concentration when you just want to be relaxed.
Budget-wise, mid-range is accurate. You’re not spending Mykonos money, but don’t expect budget travel either.
**Verdict:** Yes, go — but go for specific reasons. If dramatic beaches, serious water sports, and natural scenery are your priorities, Lefkada will genuinely satisfy you. If you want culture, architecture, or authentic village life, you’re probably on the wrong island.
