# Lefkada in May: The Honest Take

May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Lefkada, and I’ll tell you why without overselling it.

The weather sits around 23°C, which sounds perfect on paper and mostly is in practice. You’ll get warm, sunny days that are absolutely ideal for exploring – not so hot that you’re melting on a hillside by 11am, which is exactly what August does to you. The 20mm of rain sounds alarming but it isn’t really. That’s spread across maybe three or four brief showers across the whole month, often overnight or clearing quickly. Pack a light layer for evenings because it does cool down, and you’ll want it anyway when you’re sitting by the harbour after dinner.

The crowds situation is genuinely good. The island hasn’t fully switched on yet. You can actually park near Porto Katsiki without wanting to cry. Egremni, that dramatic beach requiring the long stair descent, feels like you discovered it yourself. This changes dramatically in July and August when Lefkada becomes noticeably busier than people expect for somewhere that requires a bridge crossing.

Most things are open by mid-May. Tavernas, boat hire, the beach bars at Agios Nikitas – all running. Some smaller places and the more seasonal spots might be opening up week by week through early May, so if you’re going in the first ten days, don’t assume everything is fully operational yet. Late May is basically the sweet spot.

Is it worth it and for whom? Absolutely worth it if you care about actually seeing the beaches without managing crowds around them, if you want to hike the coastal paths without overheating, or if you’re couple-travelling or going with friends rather than families needing guaranteed bucket-and-spade conditions every single day. Families with young kids who need reliable beach weather every day might find the occasional cool morning frustrating.

**One practical tip:** rent a car from day one. Lefkada’s best beaches are completely inaccessible without one, and in May the roads are genuinely pleasant rather than the traffic queue they become in summer.
