# Split in July: Beautiful, Busy, and Brutally Hot
Let me be straight with you: July in Split is peak everything. Peak tourists, peak prices, peak heat. That 25.5°C average figure is technically accurate and also slightly misleading, because it’s an average. Midday on the Riva promenade or inside Diocletian’s Palace, you’ll feel significantly hotter, especially when you’re shuffling shoulder-to-shoulder with half of Europe through narrow stone streets that trap heat like an oven.
The 5mm of rain essentially means it won’t rain. You might get one brief, dramatic storm that everyone talks about for days. Otherwise, expect relentless sunshine and dry air from morning until those gorgeous golden-hour evenings that make you forgive everything.
What’s it actually like? Crowded in a way that surprises most people. The Old Town becomes genuinely congested by 10am. Cruise ships dock regularly and deposit hundreds of people who have four hours to see everything, which creates a particular kind of frantic energy in the Palace district. Restaurants are open, bars are pumping until 4am, boat trips to the islands are running constantly, and the beaches at Bačvice and Kaštelet are packed but functional.
Everything is open, which is genuinely great. Ferries to Hvar, Brač, and Vis run multiple times daily. Tours, kayaking, restaurants, all of it operating at full capacity.
**Is it worth it?** For the right person, absolutely yes. If you’re in your twenties, want nightlife, island hopping, and don’t mind a crowd, July Split is incredible fun. If you want quiet contemplation of Roman ruins or budget-friendly exploration, you will be disappointed and slightly irritated throughout.
Families can manage it but need early starts before the heat builds and the crowds arrive.
**One practical tip:** Book your accommodation inside or immediately adjacent to the Old Town, and then leave it very early. By 7:30am the Palace is genuinely peaceful, the light is extraordinary, and you’ll feel like you have the place to yourself for about ninety glorious minutes before the day begins properly.
