Where to Stay in Halkidiki

Where to Stay in Halkidiki

Halkidiki’s three peninsulas each attract a different kind of traveler, and where you stay shapes your entire experience. For mid-range budgets, Kassandra, the first peninsula, offers the best value without sacrificing convenience. Towns like Kallithea and Hanioti have a solid range of three-star hotels and apartment complexes where you can expect clean rooms, a pool, and breakfast for around 70 to 120 euros per night during July and August. These areas sit close to decent beaches and have genuine local tavernas mixed in with the tourist strip, so you’re not entirely cocooned in a resort bubble.

Sithonia, the middle peninsula, is honestly the better choice if you want scenery alongside affordability. Vourvourou and Neos Marmaras have smaller family-run guesthouses and studios that punch above their price point. The roads are winding and dramatic, the water is a ridiculous shade of turquoise, and the crowds thin out noticeably compared to Kassandra. Budget slightly more for transport here since you’ll want a hire car to explore properly.

Mount Athos, the third peninsula, is largely inaccessible to tourists for religious reasons, so focus your attention on the other two.

One mistake people consistently make is booking accommodation inland to save thirty euros and underestimating how much a short distance from the coast matters in peak Greek summer heat. Without easy beach access, the appeal drops sharply.

For tighter mid-range budgets, studio apartments with a kitchenette in Sithonia let you cut food costs significantly. Spend on one or two excellent seafood meals rather than eating out every night. For those at the upper end of mid-range, seek out small boutique hotels in Vourvourou rather than the larger Kassandra resort complexes, which can feel impersonal and charge premium rates for mediocre food.

Avoid the extreme southern tips of Kassandra in August unless you genuinely enjoy shoulder-to-shoulder crowds. Pefkohori and Polychrono are calmer alternatives on the same peninsula with similar prices but more breathing room. Book early for July visits because mid-range options sell out faster than budget or luxury properties.
