# Split in May: Honest Take

May is probably the sweet spot for Split, and most people who’ve been there in July will tell you that themselves, usually while describing how they couldn’t move through Diocletian’s Palace without elbowing someone.

**What it actually feels like**

Nearly 20 degrees is genuinely pleasant rather than just technically warm. You can walk the old city walls and the Marjan Hill trail without arriving completely soaked in sweat, which matters more than you’d think in a place where half the appeal is wandering slowly. Evenings still carry a slight chill, so you’ll want a jacket after sunset, but afternoons are proper t-shirt weather. The 20mm of rain across the month means you’ll probably catch one grey day, maybe two. Not nothing, but nothing to plan around either.

**Crowds and atmosphere**

The cruise ships are starting to appear, so mornings inside the Palace can feel busier than you’d expect for shoulder season, particularly around the Peristyle. By afternoon they’ve largely gone. The Riva promenade has locals actually using it, which sounds minor but completely changes the atmosphere compared to summer when it’s wall-to-wall tourists taking the same photograph.

**What’s open**

Everything. This isn’t early spring where you’re rattling locked restaurant doors. Restaurants, boat trips to the islands, beaches at Bačvice – all operating properly. Ferry connections to Hvar and Brač are running full schedules.

**Who should go in May**

Honestly, anyone who actually wants to experience the city rather than just photograph it. It’s ideal for people who hate heat, hate crowds, or want to spend proper time in a place. Less good if your vision of Croatia involves packed beach bars until 4am – that energy doesn’t really arrive until late June.

**One practical thing**

Book accommodation earlier than you think you need to. May has a reputation now. The good apartments inside or immediately around the old town go fast, and staying outside that area in Split genuinely affects your experience.
