# Split in September: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About Enough

September in Split might be the worst-kept secret on the Adriatic. The summer crowds that absolutely choke Diocletian’s Palace in July and August start thinning out noticeably, especially after the first week, and the city actually starts to feel like somewhere you can move around without wanting to cry.

**What it actually feels like**

At around 21°C, you’re not melting. The sea is still genuinely warm from three months of summer heat, hovering around 24-25°C, so swimming is completely real and not just technically possible. You’ll get the occasional rainy day – that 20mm spread across the month usually means a few proper afternoon showers rather than constant drizzle – and honestly those cooler evenings are a gift after the brutal August heat. Pack a light layer for after dinner.

**Crowds and vibe**

Early September still has a summery pulse. Croatian schools go back and European families largely disappear, but the twenty-something traveller crowd hangs around. By the third week, things genuinely calm down. Restaurant waits get shorter, you can actually browse the market stalls without getting elbowed, and locals reclaim the Riva promenade in a way that makes the whole place feel more authentic.

**What’s open**

Pretty much everything. Bars, restaurants, boat trips, the beaches at Bačvice – all still running. Some seasonal beach clubs start winding down late September, but you won’t feel like you’ve arrived for the closing shift.

**Is it worth it?**

For most people, September is genuinely better than peak summer. If your version of a holiday involves actually enjoying where you are rather than surviving it, yes, absolutely come.

It works especially well for culture-focused travellers, couples, anyone who hated the chaos they experienced in previous years, and people who like eating outdoors without sweating through their shirt.

**One practical tip**

Book accommodation earlier than you think you need to. September has a reputation now, and the good mid-range places in the Old Town fill up faster than the month’s relaxed reputation suggests they should.
