# Hvar in September: The Sweet Spot You’ve Been Waiting For
Honestly? September might be the best time to visit Hvar, and the locals know it even if the travel blogs bury it underneath July recommendations.
The temperature sits around 21°C, which sounds modest until you’re actually there. After the brutal 35-degree August furnace, this feels genuinely pleasant. You can walk the old town without sweating through your shirt before 9am. You can hike up to the Spanish Fortress without questioning your life choices. The sea is still warm from months of summer heat, hovering around 24-25°C, so swimming remains absolutely brilliant well into the month.
The crowd situation changes dramatically. The mega-yachts start thinning out after the first week. The beach clubs still operate but you can actually get a sunbed without sending a reservation request three days in advance. Hvar Town still has plenty of tourists – don’t expect a ghost town – but the particular madness of peak season, the shouting, the bachelor parties everywhere, the hour-long waits for tables, mostly fades. You can have a coffee on the main square and actually hear the person sitting opposite you.
Rainfall at 20mm across the month is minimal. You might get a couple of overcast afternoons, maybe one proper shower, nothing that derails a trip. Restaurants and bars remain largely open through September, with some starting to reduce hours toward the final week. The ferry connections stay reliable. Lavender fields have finished blooming but the island still looks beautiful.
September suits couples, people in their 30s and 40s, solo travellers, and anyone who wants the Croatian island experience without the circus. It’s less ideal if your holiday entirely depends on nightlife energy, which does drop noticeably compared to August.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation early anyway. September has a loyal following among European travellers who’ve done the August thing once and learned their lesson. The good apartments and boutique hotels still fill up, just not as frantically. Mid-September onwards gives you slightly better prices and noticeably fewer people.
Worth it? Genuinely, yes.
