February in Heraklion is genuinely grey, occasionally soggy, and completely lacking the electric blue skies you’ve seen in every photo. Average temperatures sit around 12°C, and you’ll get roughly 50mm of rain across the month, which sounds manageable until it arrives sideways in a Mediterranean squall that soaks you in about forty seconds. Pack a proper waterproof jacket, not a fashion one.

Here’s the thing though: the city actually functions like a real place in February rather than a theme park. Locals eat in the tavernas, have conversations at normal volume, and don’t visibly resent your presence. You can walk through the old market streets without anyone aggressively guiding you toward a restaurant. It’s genuinely refreshing if you’ve visited Crete in summer and spent the whole time feeling like livestock being moved between attractions.

The Archaeological Museum is open and absolutely worth your full attention without crowds breathing on the exhibits. The Venetian harbour and Koules Fortress are accessible and atmospheric in winter light, though yes, you might be pulling your hood up while you look at them.

Restaurants and kafeneions in the city centre stay open year-round. You won’t struggle to eat well. The village tavernas outside the city and most beach resort infrastructure further along the coast are a different story – expect shutters and silence.

Is it worth it? For history-focused travellers, budget travellers, or anyone who finds peak-season tourism actively unpleasant, yes, genuinely. For someone whose holiday happiness depends on sitting by a pool with a cold drink in the sun, absolutely not – book May or September instead, no judgment.

**One practical tip:** The Archaeological Museum closes on Mondays. Don’t organise your entire trip and then discover this while standing outside it on a rainy Monday morning. Check current opening hours before you travel, because honestly that’s the most painful way to waste a February afternoon in Crete.
