# Cádiz in February: The Honest Version

Here’s the thing about Cádiz in February that nobody really warns you about: it might actually be the best time to go, but not for the reasons you’d expect.

The weather is genuinely fine rather than spectacular. Sixteen degrees sounds underwhelming on paper, but walking the old city’s narrow streets in a light jacket without sweating through your shirt is actually pleasant. You’ll want layers. The Atlantic wind has a bite to it, especially along the seafront promenade, and that 57mm of rainfall means you will see rain, probably in sudden moody bursts rather than sustained drizzle. Carry something waterproof and don’t let a grey morning ruin your plans, because afternoons often clear beautifully.

What makes February remarkable here is Carnival. Cádiz hosts one of Spain’s most genuinely celebrated carnivals, usually running across two weekends in February, and it’s legitimately extraordinary. Satirical singing groups, elaborate costumes, the whole city participating rather than just performing for tourists. It’s chaotic, loud, packed during those specific days, and worth planning around.

Outside Carnival weekends, the city is almost entirely yours. The cathedral, the market, the fish restaurants, the coastal walks – you’re sharing them with locals and a handful of curious travellers rather than summer tour groups. Restaurants are actually easy to get into. Prices are lower. The pace is slower.

Most things are open, though some beach-facing bars operate reduced hours. The Mercado Central is reliably excellent year-round for cheap seafood lunches – don’t skip it.

Is it worth visiting? If you like walking a genuinely beautiful city at your own pace, eating well without queuing, and experiencing something authentic, absolutely yes. If you need guaranteed beach weather and a buzzing resort atmosphere, wait until June.

**Practical tip:** Check Carnival dates before booking. If you want the party, plan around it deliberately and book accommodation early – the city fills up. If you want peaceful Cádiz, arrive the week after and enjoy the emptiness while the locals recover.
