# Corfu in April: The Honest Lowdown

April is genuinely one of the better times to visit Corfu, but probably not for the reasons the travel brochures would have you believe. It’s not about avoiding crowds – it’s about experiencing the island when it actually belongs to itself.

The weather sits around 18°C, which sounds pleasant until you’re standing in a sea breeze at the top of the Old Fortress wondering if you packed wrong. It’s t-shirt weather by lunchtime, jumper weather by 6pm, and a genuine jacket situation if it rains. And it will rain – April brings around 30mm across the month, typically arriving as short, dramatic downpours rather than grey all-day drizzle. You’ll get soaked for an hour, then watch the light do extraordinary things across the Ionian afterwards.

The crowds are minimal but not nonexistent. Easter, which often falls in April for the Greek Orthodox calendar, transforms Corfu Town completely. The Saturday midnight candlelit procession and the Sunday pot-smashing from balconies are genuinely spectacular if you land on the right weekend. Outside Easter, you’ll largely have the place to yourself.

What’s open is the honest catch. Plenty of beach bars, water taxis and tourist restaurants haven’t fired up yet, particularly in resort villages like Sidari or Kavos, which feel post-apocalyptically quiet. Corfu Town itself is largely open year-round – the tavernas around Liston Square, the museums, the Old Town streets. The further north you go, the more you’re rolling the dice on finding anything operational.

Is it worth it? For beach holiday seekers chasing guaranteed sunshine and cold Mythos by a pool, honestly, not really. Wait until June. But if you want walking trails through olive groves without melting, photography without strangers in every frame, and a Corfu that’s genuinely Greek rather than a package holiday backdrop, April delivers something real.

**Practical tip:** Hire a car. Public transport barely exists outside town and April is exactly when you want to explore the interior roads through places like Lakones or Pelekas without a tour bus in the way.
