# Zakynthos in March: What It’s Actually Like
Look, March in Zakynthos is genuinely lovely, but not in the way the brochures sell Greece to you. Forget turquoise water and sunbeds. This is a different, quieter version of the island, and whether that appeals to you depends entirely on what you’re after.
The weather sits around 15 degrees, which feels pleasant if you’re arriving from northern Europe but genuinely chilly if you’re expecting Mediterranean warmth. Pack layers you actually mean to wear. There will be rain – not constant grey drizzle, but proper showers that roll in off the sea, soak everything for an hour, then leave the light looking absolutely extraordinary over the hills. That 45mm monthly average sounds alarming on paper but plays out as maybe a week’s worth of proper wet days scattered through the month. The rest is often bright, breezy, and genuinely beautiful.
The crowds simply don’t exist yet. Navagio Beach, which in summer resembles a crowded swimming pool surrounded by cliffs, is accessible and peaceful. You can actually look at the sea rather than other people looking at the sea. Laganas is essentially a ghost town, which is either refreshing or unsettling depending on your energy.
Here’s the honest part about what’s open: not much. Plenty of restaurants, beach bars, and smaller hotels remain firmly shuttered until late April or May. You’ll find the main town of Zakynthos itself functioning normally – tavernas, cafes, locals going about their lives – and that’s actually charming. But don’t plan a trip expecting full tourist infrastructure because you’ll be disappointed.
March suits hikers, photographers, couples wanting genuine quiet, and anyone interested in the island’s villages and Venetian architecture rather than its beaches. The sea is around 16 degrees, so swimming is technically possible but bracingly cold.
It genuinely doesn’t suit families with young children expecting a beach holiday, or anyone whose happiness depends on having plentiful restaurant options each evening.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation directly with smaller family-run places. Many aren’t listed anywhere online during low season but absolutely are open and delighted to have you.
