# Thessaloniki in January: Honest Thoughts
Look, January in Thessaloniki is not the postcard version. It’s grey, it’s damp, and that 7-8°C sits in your bones differently than the number suggests because the wind off the Thermaic Gulf has real bite to it. Sixty millimetres of rain across the month sounds manageable until it all arrives in three miserable days while you’re trying to walk the waterfront. Pack a proper jacket, not a stylish one.
That said, there’s something genuinely appealing about the city in January if you’re the right kind of traveller.
The crowds are essentially gone. The Rotonda, the Byzantine churches, Ano Poli – you can actually stand in these places and think. The Archaeological Museum won’t have a queue. You’ll get a table anywhere you want for dinner without a reservation, and locals will have more time for you. Thessaloniki is already a less touristy city than Athens, and in January it briefly becomes something close to just a city where you happen to be staying.
Almost everything stays open. This isn’t a seasonal resort town that shuts down. The kafeneions, the tavernas, the museums, the markets around Kapani and Modiano – functioning normally. The food scene is arguably better experienced in winter anyway, when a bowl of bean soup or slow-cooked lamb feels like exactly what the place is offering you rather than an obligation.
Is it worth it? For food-focused travellers, history enthusiasts, or anyone who genuinely prefers a quieter, more lived-in atmosphere – yes, honestly. For people who need sunshine and café terraces to enjoy a city, skip it and come in May.
One practical tip: base yourself somewhere in or near the Ladadika or city centre neighbourhoods. When the weather turns bad – and it will – you want to be able to walk to good restaurants and indoor spaces without needing transport. The waterfront looks beautiful on a clear day but it’s genuinely punishing when the wind picks up, and you’ll thank yourself for having a warm taverna thirty seconds away.
