# Kefalonia in August: What You’re Actually Getting Into

Let’s be straight with you: August in Kefalonia is full-on summer mode, and that means heat, crowds, and prices that’ll make your eyes water a little.

The weather sits around 29°C most days, which sounds dreamy until you’re standing on Myrtos Beach at 2pm with the sun bouncing off white limestone like a giant mirror. The 5mm of rain for the entire month is basically meaningless — you’re not seeing a cloud. Evenings cool down pleasantly though, and the sea temperature is perfect, genuinely bath-warm without feeling soupy.

The crowds are real. Myrtos, Antisamos, Melissani Cave — the famous spots get genuinely rammed, particularly mid-month when Greek and Italian tourists join the northern Europeans. Melissani requires queuing; just accept that upfront. If you want a quieter beach experience, head to the southern tip around Skala or explore the less-Instagrammed coves near Assos early in the morning before the boat trips arrive.

Everything is open. Restaurants, bars, boat hire, kayak tours, the lot. Argostoli is lively without being overwhelming, and the village tavernas are all running at full capacity. This is genuinely the best month for choice.

Is it worth it? For families with school-age kids who have no flexibility — absolutely yes. For young people who want a buzzy, social atmosphere with late nights in Fiskardo and beach bars in full swing — great choice. For couples wanting something relaxed and romantic? Honestly, consider late September instead. You’d get nearly identical weather, half the people, and restaurants where staff actually have time to talk to you.

**One practical tip:** Rent a car immediately when you arrive, don’t leave it for day two. August availability disappears fast and the local bus network will frustrate you quickly on an island this spread out. Book the car before you fly, sort a pickup at the airport, done.

Kefalonia is genuinely one of the most beautiful Greek islands. August just means sharing that beauty with quite a lot of other people who’ve figured out the same thing.
