# Milos in January: The Honest Version

Let’s get the weather out of the way first. Eight or nine degrees, a decent chance of rain, and winds that come off the Aegean like they have a personal grievance. The famous coloured beaches exist, but you’re looking at them in a coat rather than lying on them. Sarakiniko’s white volcanic landscape actually looks extraordinary under grey winter skies, almost lunar, and you’ll have the whole place completely to yourself, which is genuinely strange given how shoulder-to-shoulder it gets in summer. That solitude is either the whole point or entirely beside the point, depending on who you are.

Crowds are essentially nonexistent. The island’s permanent population is around 5,000 people and in January you’ll be meeting them, not tourists. Adamas, the main port town, has a handful of tavernas open and they’re full of locals eating slowly and watching football. The fishing boats are working. It feels like an actual place rather than a backdrop.

What’s closed is most things. Many restaurants, boat tour operators, several accommodation options – expect limited choice and occasionally closed-on-a-whim hours. The Catacombs and the archaeological museum are open but confirm before making special plans. Getting between villages is manageable by car, which you should absolutely rent.

Is it worth it? For photographers, writers, anyone experiencing burnout, people who want Greece without the performance of it – genuinely yes. The landscape is dramatic year-round and Milos has a geological weirdness that doesn’t require sunshine to land. For beach holidays or the boat trips that are honestly the best way to see the coastline properly, January is a mistake.

The ferry connections from Athens can be disrupted by bad weather, sometimes for multiple days. This is not a small caveat.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation that includes or can arrange dinner, because wandering out hungry on a rainy Tuesday night in January and finding three things closed is a mood-killer that’s entirely avoidable with ten minutes of planning beforehand.
