# Rovinj in May: Pretty Much the Sweet Spot
Look, I’ll be straight with you – May is probably when I’d personally choose to go to Rovinj, and I’m not just saying that.
The weather sits around 18-19°C, which sounds underwhelming on paper but feels genuinely lovely in practice. You’re not sweating through your clothes climbing up to St Euphemia’s church, you can actually sit outside for dinner without that frantic search for shade, and the Adriatic is cold enough that swimming is brisk rather than refreshing – fair warning there. Pack a light jacket because evenings drop off noticeably and that sea breeze doesn’t care about your optimism.
The 20mm of rainfall means you’ll likely get a grey day or two, maybe a sharp afternoon shower. Nothing that ruins a trip, but enough that building your entire itinerary around outdoor-only activities is slightly naive.
Crowds-wise, May is genuinely manageable. The town hasn’t filled up with peak summer visitors yet, so you can actually walk the old town’s cobbled streets without shuffling along in a human queue. Restaurants are open but have tables available. The harbour is photogenic rather than just a backdrop for other people’s selfies. Locals haven’t yet adopted that particular expression they reserve for July tourists.
Pretty much everything is open – galleries, boat trips to the nearby islands, restaurants, the market. Some things are running on shoulder-season schedules rather than full summer hours, so checking ahead before making specific plans saves mild frustration.
Is it worth it? For couples, solo travellers, anyone who likes their beauty with some breathing room – absolutely yes. Families with small kids who need guaranteed beach weather and warm swimming water might want to wait until late June. Party-focused trips would find it slightly quiet.
**One practical tip:** Book your harbour-view restaurant table in advance even in May. There aren’t that many genuinely good spots right on the water, everyone wants them, and the smug feeling of having a reservation beats hovering hopefully near someone else’s dessert.
Go. You’ll like it.
