# Hydra in November: Quiet, Grey, and Genuinely Lovely
Hydra in November feels like borrowing someone else’s village for a while. The donkeys are still there, the cats are still there, the harbour is still beautiful — but the people largely aren’t, and that changes everything.
The weather is honest rather than cruel. Fourteen degrees means you’ll want a proper jacket, especially on the water, and those 60mm of rain across the month aren’t nothing — expect maybe eight or nine wet days, often grey mornings that sometimes brighten into decent afternoons. It’s not swimming weather, obviously, but it’s perfectly fine for walking the stone paths up into the hills or sitting outside a café with something warm. The light on overcast days is actually quite beautiful for photography, soft and without the bleaching harshness of summer.
The crowds, or absence of them, is the real story. In August this island is genuinely overwhelming — narrow paths clogged, tavernas with hour waits, the harbour a chaos of day-trippers. In November you can hear yourself think. You can have a whole hillside to yourself. Locals will actually talk to you because they have time to.
What’s open is the honest caveat. Expect maybe a third of restaurants and shops to be shuttered. The remaining ones are usually the better, more established places — the ones that don’t need to sprint through tourist season and disappear. Check ahead for accommodation because your options are significantly reduced, though prices drop considerably for what remains.
Who is this actually for? People who genuinely like walking, reading, eating simply and slowly, and being somewhere beautiful without performing being-on-holiday. Couples rather than groups. Anyone who found their previous Greek island visit slightly exhausting and wants to try a different version of it. It is absolutely not for people who need sunshine guaranteed or a buzzing nightlife.
**Practical tip:** Bring layers you can actually walk in, not just a stylish coat. The paths between villages involve real climbing and you will absolutely overheat then freeze within the same hour.
