Visiting Gran Canaria in August
# Gran Canaria in August: What You’re Actually Getting Into
Let me be straight with you: August in Gran Canaria is peak everything. Peak heat, peak crowds, peak prices. The Canaries sit off the African coast, and in August that proximity reminds you constantly. Temperatures in the south hover around 27-30°C, occasionally pushing higher, with humidity making it feel stickier than the numbers suggest. The north and interior stay slightly cooler and can surprise you with cloud and wind – that’s just how this island works, two completely different climates separated by a mountain range.
Rainfall is genuinely minimal. You’re not packing an umbrella, but you might occasionally get a strange dusty haze when Saharan winds blow in – the calima – which kills the beach vibe, coats everything in fine orange dust, and makes breathing feel like a mild inconvenience. It doesn’t last long, but it’s worth knowing about.
The crowds are serious. Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés are absolutely rammed with European holidaymakers, predominantly German, Dutch, and British families who’ve been coming here for decades. The dunes are stunning but you’re sharing them with several thousand other people. Restaurants in tourist areas are busy and slightly overpriced. Book everything in advance – accommodation, car hire, nicer restaurants – because August leaves nothing to chance.
Everything is open. This isn’t a place that shuts down in summer; it’s when the money rolls in. Water parks, boat trips, restaurants, shops – all running at full capacity. Las Palmas in the north is genuinely worth a day trip: real city, real Canarian life, beautiful old quarter.
Is it worth it? Honestly, yes, if you go in knowing what it is. Families with school-age kids don’t always get to choose timing. Beach holiday seekers who want reliable sun, warm water and infrastructure will be happy. If you want peace and quiet, go in October or November instead.
**Practical tip:** Rent a car and drive to the centre. The mountainous interior around Tejeda is dramatically cooler and almost empty in August. Best kept secret on the island.
