# Rovinj in October: The Honest Version

October is genuinely one of the better times to visit Rovinj, though not for the reasons you might romanticize it beforehand.

The crowds have largely evaporated. That famous old town peninsula, which spends July and August absolutely heaving with people trying to photograph the same narrow staircase, becomes something you can actually walk around without feeling like cattle. The light in autumn is softer and lower, which makes those terracotta rooftops look ridiculously good in the afternoon. You can finally sit at a harbourside table without someone hovering over your shoulder waiting for your seat.

At 15.4°C, you’re looking at proper jacket weather rather than beach weather. Mornings and evenings get genuinely cool, sometimes dipping toward 10°C, so pack accordingly. The 45mm of rain across the month means you’ll likely encounter a few grey, drizzly days – probably a couple of full washout days scattered among largely decent ones. This isn’t constant misery, but it’s real, and an indoor backup plan matters.

Here’s what actually stays open: most restaurants, the market, the harbor walk, the churches, kayaking on calm days. What starts closing are the beach bars, some smaller family-run eateries, and many of the day-trip boat operators. The swimming is technically possible but optimistic rather than enjoyable for most people.

**Is it worth it?** Honestly, yes – for the right person. If you want culture, good food, photography, gentle walks along the coast, and authentic evening atmospheres in restaurants where locals actually eat, October delivers. If you’re coming for Adriatic swimming, cold beer on a sun-lounger, and beach holiday energy, this is the wrong month and you should know that going in.

**Practical tip:** Book a room in or immediately adjacent to the old town itself, not the resort hotels on the outskirts. In peak summer those locations are noisy and overpriced. In October, prices drop significantly and you’ll have the evening atmosphere genuinely to yourself – which is the whole point of coming here at all.
