# Petrovac in May: What It’s Actually Like

May sits in that interesting shoulder-season sweet spot for Petrovac, and honestly it’s one of the more pleasant times to visit if you know what you’re getting into.

The weather is genuinely unpredictable. Most days you’ll get mild temperatures in the low-to-mid twenties, warm enough to sit at a cafe in a light jacket and feel pretty good about life. But May in Montenegro can turn on you. A grey, drizzly week is entirely possible, and the Adriatic looks considerably less glamorous under heavy cloud. Don’t book on the assumption you’ll be swimming every day, because you might not. The sea temperature is still cool anyway, hovering around 18-19°C, so brave souls only.

What Petrovac does beautifully in May is just *exist* without the madness. The main promenade is walkable. You can actually get a table at a restaurant without hovering awkwardly. The old Venetian fortress, the little beach, the olive island just offshore – you can take all of it in at your own pace without elbowing through crowds of package tourists. That changes dramatically in July and August, so if you like somewhere to feel like a real place rather than a resort backdrop, May genuinely delivers.

Most things are open, but not everything. Some smaller restaurants and apartments are still dusting themselves off after winter. A few spots might open Thursday to Sunday only, or feel slightly underpopulated in a way that’s either charming or slightly melancholy depending on your mood.

Is it worth going? If you’re a hiker, a slow traveller, someone who wants to use Petrovac as a base for exploring the surrounding coast and Rumija mountain without sweating through your clothes, absolutely yes. If you need a guaranteed beach holiday with buzzing nightlife, wait until June at the earliest.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation with free cancellation. Seriously. If May decides to be relentlessly wet that particular year, you want options. Flexibility is your best friend in shoulder season.
