Where to Stay in Zadar

Zadar is a city that rewards guests who choose their base carefully, and for mid-range travelers the sweet spot sits right along the peninsula that forms the old town. Staying within or immediately adjacent to the historic center puts you within walking distance of the Sea Organ, the Roman Forum, and the waterfront promenade without demanding the premium prices of the most coveted sea-view rooms. Streets like Široka ulica and the areas near Narodni trg offer solid mid-range boutique hotels and apartment rentals where you can expect clean, well-designed rooms with genuine character for roughly 80 to 130 euros per night depending on the season.

The Borik area to the northwest is worth considering if you prefer a resort-style setup with beach access, and several three-star hotels there offer good value. The tradeoff is distance from the old town, which means relying on a bus or rideshare for evening dining and sightseeing. It works well for families but feels slightly disconnected for solo travelers or couples who want spontaneous evening walks along the waterfront.

Avoid booking anything on the far eastern side of the mainland near the bus station district. It sounds convenient on paper but the surroundings are uninspiring, the walk into the old town is longer than listings suggest, and the energy simply does not match what makes Zadar worth visiting in the first place.

Budget travelers can find decent private rooms and smaller guesthouses just outside the old town walls where prices drop noticeably without sacrificing much. Splurge-level visitors should look specifically for apartments directly on the Riva promenade or restored stone houses within the old walls, where the experience justifies the higher cost.

The booking mistake people consistently make is filtering only by price and ignoring whether a property sits on the peninsula or on the mainland across the bridge. The map can be misleading and some listings describe themselves as central when they require a ten to fifteen minute walk just to reach the old town entrance. Always verify the exact pin location before confirming.
