# Split in November: The Honest Version

Here’s the thing about Split in November – it’s not the Instagram version of Croatia, and that’s either a problem or a point, depending on who you are.

The weather sits around 11-12°C, which sounds manageable until the bura wind decides to show up and make it feel genuinely miserable. You’ll get roughly 60mm of rain across the month, usually arriving in that heavy, dramatic Mediterranean way – fierce downpours that stop as suddenly as they started, then bright cold sunshine. Pack layers and a proper waterproof, not a fashion jacket.

What you’ll find is a city that actually belongs to its residents again. Diocletian’s Palace – that remarkable Roman emperor’s retirement home that people literally live inside – is still completely free to wander, and in November you can linger in the courtyards without being shoulder-to-shoulder with tour groups. The Peristyle square, which in summer feels like a theme park, becomes genuinely atmospheric. You’ll notice the architecture properly for the first time.

Most restaurants are open, particularly those serving locals rather than tourists. Prices drop noticeably. The seafood remains excellent. A few beach bars and summer-only spots will be shuttered, but the old town has enough going on year-round.

The cathedral, the museums, the market on the waterfront – all accessible without the August chaos. The Marjan Hill walk above the city is actually lovely in autumn light, assuming the rain holds off for an hour.

Is it worth it? Honestly, yes – but specifically if you care about history, walking, eating well, and don’t need a beach holiday. Solo travellers, couples, anyone who finds summer crowds exhausting will find November genuinely rewarding here. If you’re hoping for Croatian coastline glamour, warm evenings on a terrace, or swimming, you’re in the wrong month entirely.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation in the old town itself. When November rain arrives sideways, being a five-minute walk from everything rather than fifteen makes an enormous difference to your mood.
