Visiting Skopelos in May
# Skopelos in May: Worth the Trip?
May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Skopelos, and I’ll tell you why without overselling it.
The weather is warming up but hasn’t tipped into the relentless heat of July and August. Expect temperatures somewhere in the high teens to low twenties Celsius, with occasional cooler days that keep things comfortable. Here’s the honest part about rainfall: May can still throw a surprise shower at you, sometimes even a proper rainy day or two. It’s not monsoon season, but don’t leave the waterproof layer at home assuming Greek islands means guaranteed sunshine. Some years are gorgeous wall-to-wall. Others give you a grey Tuesday that feels more like April. Pack accordingly and don’t build an itinerary that completely collapses if one afternoon gets rained out.
The sea is still cool. Swimming is possible but you need to be someone who actually gets in cold water without complaining loudly, because it won’t be warm yet. By late May it’s more manageable, but don’t expect the bath-warm Aegean of high summer.
What’s open? Most things. Restaurants are running, the ferries are operating properly, shops are unlocked. You won’t arrive to find the whole island shuttered. Tavernas in Skopelos Town and Glossa will be serving, hiking trails are accessible, and the monastery circuit is absolutely doable. In fact, the landscape in May is stunning because everything is still green and the wildflowers are finishing up. The island genuinely looks beautiful.
Crowds are light. This matters on Skopelos specifically, which is small and gets genuinely packed in summer. In May you can wander the chora without shuffling through tour groups. You can get a table without a reservation. You can actually hear the place.
Is it worth visiting in May? Yes, if you’re a walker, someone who values atmosphere over beach weather, or you just can’t stomach high season pricing and chaos.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation anyway. May is growing in popularity and the good smaller guesthouses fill up earlier than you’d expect.
