Visiting Hvar in March

Visiting Hvar in March

Weather in March: Average high 12.9°C, 45mm rainfall.

# Hvar in March: Pretty, Quiet, and a Bit Damp

Look, Hvar in March is not the glossy Instagram version you’ve seen. The lavender isn’t blooming, the famous beach bars are shuttered, and that 12.9°C average means you’ll want a proper jacket. But honestly? Depending on what you’re after, it can be genuinely lovely.

**What it actually feels like**

Cool and quiet, with a side of moody. The light on the old stone town is genuinely beautiful when the sun breaks through, and it does break through – March isn’t relentlessly grey. But 45mm of rainfall means you’ll hit some wet days, occasionally properly wet. The Adriatic looks dramatic rather than inviting. Don’t even think about swimming.

**Crowds**

Essentially none. The hordes of summer partygoers are completely absent. You can walk the main Pjaca square, explore the fortress, and wander the old streets without a single selfie stick in your eyeline. Restaurants feel like real local places rather than tourist conveyor belts, because mostly they’re serving locals.

**What’s open**

This is the honest part that catches people out. Plenty is closed – beach clubs, many restaurants, a handful of accommodation options. The cathedral, fortress, and historic town are all accessible. Some cafes and konobas stay open year-round, and you’ll find enough eating and drinking options, just not abundance. Check your specific accommodation is actually open before booking.

**Is it worth it?**

For the right person, absolutely yes. If you want to photograph a beautiful Venetian town in peace, do some walking in the surrounding hills, eat well without queuing, and pay significantly less than summer rates, March delivers. If you’re coming for nightlife, boat parties, or beach days, come back in July.

**One practical tip**

Pack layers and bring waterproof shoes, not sandals. The stone streets get slippery when wet and you’ll be doing more walking than you expect. Comfortable waterproof footwear will genuinely make or break a rainy afternoon exploring the backstreets.

It’s Hvar with the volume turned down. Some people find that’s exactly what they needed.
