# Hvar in October: The Honest Version

Here’s the thing about Hvar in October — it’s a completely different island to the one you’ve been seeing on Instagram. And depending on what you actually want from a trip, that’s either great news or a reason to book somewhere else.

The weather sits around 16 degrees, which feels genuinely pleasant if you’re from northern Europe and deeply disappointing if you were imagining yourself on a sun lounger. You’ll want a jacket for evenings, sometimes for mornings too. There’s about 45mm of rain across the month, so expect a few grey days where the clouds sit low over the Pakleni Islands and everything looks a bit dramatic and melancholy. Honestly, it’s beautiful in a completely different way.

Crowds are essentially gone. The main square in Hvar Town, which becomes genuinely unbearable in July and August — loud, expensive, heaving with yacht people — is quiet enough to actually sit in. You can get a table at good restaurants without planning days ahead. Locals are visibly more relaxed because they’re not being steamrolled by forty thousand tourists.

The flip side is real though. Some restaurants have closed for the season. Beach bars, gone. A handful of accommodation options, shut. The ferry connections thin out a little. If you’re heading to smaller villages expecting things to be open, check first, because you might find shuttered doors and a very peaceful nothing.

What remains open tends to be the better stuff anyway — traditional konobas, wine producers in Stari Grad who’ll actually talk to you, the lavender fields stripped back but still fragrant. Hiking and cycling become genuinely enjoyable without the summer heat trying to kill you.

Worth it? Absolutely yes for couples, solo travellers, anyone who likes atmosphere over action, food-focused visitors, and people who find peak-season Mediterranean tourism a bit exhausting. Not ideal if you’re travelling with kids expecting beach days or you want the full buzzing nightlife version.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation before you arrive — less choice is open, and the good places fill faster than you’d expect for shoulder season.
