# Korčula in April: Honest Notes
April in Korčula sits in that slightly awkward shoulder season where the island is genuinely beautiful but hasn’t quite decided to fully wake up yet. That’s either a feature or a bug, depending on what you’re after.
The weather is mild rather than warm. Sixteen degrees means you’ll want a jacket in the evening and you won’t be swimming unless you’re the type who swims in Scotland for fun. Expect a handful of rainy days throughout the month – not dramatic thunderstorms usually, just grey drizzle that rolls in off the Adriatic and makes the stone alleyways of the old town look genuinely cinematic. Pack a waterproof layer and stop stressing about it.
The old town itself is quietly lovely in April. You can actually walk those narrow medieval streets without shuffling along in a crocodile of tourists. The famous town gate, the cathedral, the Marco Polo house – you can linger properly and read the information boards without someone’s wheelie suitcase hitting your ankles. Korčula town deserves that attention.
What’s open is a mixed picture. Some restaurants are running, the good bakeries are reliably open, and you’ll find bars with coffee and local wine. But count on maybe a third of places being closed or opening erratically. Don’t arrive with a rigid plan that depends on a specific restaurant being ready for you.
Is it worth going? Genuinely yes, if you’re someone who values atmosphere over beach time. Photographers, history people, couples wanting somewhere that feels romantic rather than just pretty – April works well for all of those. If you’re coming specifically to swim, lie on a beach and eat every night somewhere buzzing, wait until June.
The ferry connections from Split are running but less frequent than summer, so check schedules before you finalise plans.
**One practical tip:** bring your own snacks and breakfast supplies from a supermarket on day one. Several mornings you’ll wake up wanting coffee and something to eat before the town has properly stirred, and you’ll be glad you planned for it.
