# Lisbon in August: What You’re Actually Getting Into

Let’s be straight with you: August in Lisbon is hot, busy, and a little chaotic. That’s not necessarily a dealbreaker, but you should know what you’re signing up for.

That 27.4°C average sounds reasonable until you’re climbing Alfama’s cobblestone hills at 2pm with the sun bouncing off whitewashed walls and zero shade in sight. Temperatures regularly push past 35°C during peak afternoon hours, and the city holds heat like a storage heater. The 2.4mm of rainfall is essentially decorative – you probably won’t see a single drop. Pack accordingly, and honestly, just surrender the 1-4pm window to your hotel or a long lunch somewhere air-conditioned.

Crowds are real. Lisbon has become genuinely popular, and August is peak European holiday season. Belém Tower queues, packed trams (the famous 28E especially), restaurants fully booked by 7pm – this is the version of Lisbon you’ll encounter. Book everything in advance. Everything.

Here’s the interesting wrinkle though: many locals have actually *left*. Lisboetas head to the coast or their home villages in August, which gives the city a slightly strange, tourist-heavy atmosphere. Some neighbourhood restaurants close for the whole month, so you’ll occasionally find shuttered spots you’d specifically wanted to try.

What’s good? Everything tourist-facing is absolutely open and running. Museums, viewpoints, river cruises, Sintra day trips – all fully operational. The evenings are genuinely lovely, warm and long, perfect for sitting outside with a glass of wine until midnight. Cascais and Estoril are easy train rides away when you need to cool down.

**Is it worth it?** If you have flexibility, September is honestly better – still warm, noticeably quieter, cheaper. But if August is what you’ve got, Lisbon still delivers. It’s a beautiful city that can absorb the crowds better than most.

**One practical tip:** Get up early. Seriously. The city before 9am in August is almost magical – cool, quiet, golden light. Do your sightseeing then. Sleep through the afternoon. Eat late. Live on Lisbon time.
