# Makarska in May: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About

May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Makarska, and I say that as someone who’s also been there in August when you’re essentially paying premium prices to be slowly cooked alongside several thousand Germans and Czechs on a strip of beach the size of a parking lot.

The weather sits around 21-22°C, which sounds modest until you’re actually there. It’s warm enough to swim if you’re not precious about water temperature, perfect for walking the Biokovo mountain trails without sweating through your clothes immediately, and genuinely pleasant for sitting outside with a coffee for two hours because nobody is rushing you anywhere. You’ll get some rain – May sees decent rainfall, so pack a light jacket and don’t build your entire trip around consecutive beach days. It tends to come in bursts rather than dreary all-day greyness, so you adapt and move on.

Crowds are refreshingly thin. The promenade is walkable. You can get a table at a good restaurant without a reservation or a minor psychological breakdown. Prices for accommodation haven’t yet jumped into the summer madness bracket, and locals are still in a relatively good mood before the full tourist season grinds them down.

Almost everything is open by May. Restaurants, boat trips, the cable car up Biokovo – it’s all running. You’re not arriving to shuttered storefronts and a town that hasn’t woken up yet, which can happen if you push your luck into April.

Is it worth it? Absolutely, if you want a relaxed trip combining coast and mountains, good food, and actual breathing room. It’s ideal for couples, hikers, people who find peak-season beach tourism quietly miserable, and anyone over thirty who’s done the August thing once and learned their lesson.

**One practical tip:** Book Biokovo Nature Park and the cable car online in advance. It’s already attracting visitors in May, and you don’t want to drive up that road and find yourself turned away at the entrance.
