# Mljet in March: Honest Thoughts
Look, March on Mljet is not the postcard version. The lakes aren’t that impossible turquoise yet, the light is flat more often than not, and there’s a decent chance you’ll spend at least two days watching rain streak down your accommodation window. At 11.7°C and nearly 140mm of rainfall across the month, you’re dealing with genuine shoulder-season Mediterranean weather, which means layers, a waterproof jacket, and adjusted expectations.
That said, there’s something genuinely compelling about the island in March if you go in clear-eyed.
The crowds are essentially zero. The national park exists almost entirely for you. You can walk the trail around Veliko Jezero without seeing another tourist, hear actual silence in the pine forests, and feel like you’ve stumbled onto something real rather than a heavily managed experience. The ferry still runs from Dubrovnik or Prapratno, but passenger numbers are minimal.
What’s open is the honest question. The national park itself operates year-round, so you can access the lakes and trails. But the restaurant situation is thin – maybe one or two spots on the whole island are trading, and hours are unpredictable. The small hotel on the islet of St. Mary closes entirely. Most private accommodation reopens around Easter. Come with supplies and low dining expectations.
Is it worth it? For photographers, serious hikers, people actively seeking solitude, or anyone who finds peak-season Croatia exhausting and overpriced – genuinely yes. The island feels like it belongs to the locals again, which is its actual natural state. For families with kids, anyone needing reliable sunshine, or first-time visitors wanting the full Adriatic experience, March will disappoint.
The park entrance fee is still charged, though reduced in low season, so factor that in.
**One practical tip:** Don’t rely on any single restaurant being open. Bring enough food for at least one full day from the mainland. The only thing worse than rain on a beautiful island is rain on a beautiful island when you’re also hungry and nothing’s serving.
