Let me be straight with you: December Positano is a completely different animal from the Instagram version most people have saved to their travel folders.

The town is genuinely beautiful in a melancholy, washed-out way. Those famous stacked pastel buildings look almost more painterly without the summer crowds obscuring them, and you can actually stand on the beach and appreciate the whole scene rather than negotiating around sunbeds and selfie sticks. The Amalfi Coast light in winter, when it appears, is soft and golden and kind of heartbreaking.

But about that rain. Nearly 119mm across the month means you will almost certainly get rained on, probably more than once. Not constant drizzle necessarily, but proper Mediterranean downpours that roll in fast and make those famous steep staircases genuinely treacherous. **Is it worth visiting?** For photographers, people who find summer tourism genuinely exhausting, or anyone doing a broader Naples and Campania trip who wants a peaceful overnight stop — yes, absolutely. For someone whose heart is set on aperitivo on a sunny terrace with their feet in warm sand — honestly, save it for May or October.

**One practical tip:** Book accommodation that specifically confirms December availability before you get attached to it. Half the hotels listed online will be locked up with a handwritten sign on the door, and discovering this after a winding bus journey down from Sorrento is a miserable experience that nobody needs.
