Visiting Sorrento in May

# Sorrento in May: What It’s Actually Like

May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Sorrento, but let me be honest with you rather than just cheerleading.

**The weather situation**

May in Sorrento is warm but not guaranteed. You’re looking at average highs around 20-22°C, which feels lovely in sunshine but noticeably cool if clouds roll in off the bay. And they do sometimes. Rain is possible, particularly in early May, so don’t pack exclusively sundresses and sandals. A light jacket and one layer you can add in the evening will save you from a miserable dinner on a terrace when the temperature drops after sunset. The sea is still cold for swimming — most people paddle and immediately regret it.

**Crowds and what’s actually open**

Here’s the good news: May sits in that sweet spot before the summer invasion. Italian school holidays haven’t started, the cruise ship volume isn’t yet at its August insanity, and you can actually walk the Corso Italia without wanting to abandon civilization. Restaurants are fully open, boats to Capri are running regularly, and you can get a table somewhere decent without booking three weeks ahead. The lemon groves are looking genuinely beautiful, everything is green, and the light on the water in the late afternoon is the reason people paint this coastline.

**Is it worth it, and for whom**

Honestly, yes — particularly if you hate crowds, want to eat well without queuing, and don’t need guaranteed beach weather. May suits couples, older travelers, food-focused visitors, and anyone doing a wider Amalfi Coast trip who wants a base that isn’t exhausting. If your entire holiday depends on lying on a sunlounger in 30-degree heat, wait until July and accept the chaos that comes with it.

**One practical tip**

Book your ferry to Capri early in the morning. By 10am the queues are already building and the boat is packed. Get there first, while everyone else is still at breakfast. The island at 8:30am feels like a completely different place.
