# Valencia in March: The Honest Version
Here’s the thing about Valencia in March – it’s genuinely good, but not for the reasons most travel sites will tell you.
The weather is mild rather than warm. Fourteen or fifteen degrees sounds pleasant until you’re sitting outside at a café at 11am in the shade, wishing you’d brought a second layer. Afternoons can be lovely, genuinely t-shirt weather if the sun cooperates, but mornings and evenings have a definite chill. The 45mm of rain that typically falls isn’t constant drizzle – it comes in bursts, sometimes heavy, then it clears. Pack a compact umbrella and stop worrying about it.
The crowds situation is interesting. Most of March is refreshingly calm – locals going about their lives, museums you can actually move through, restaurants where you don’t need reservations for every single meal. Then Las Fallas hits (usually the 15th to 19th), and Valencia transforms into something genuinely extraordinary and absolutely heaving. Massive paper-maché sculptures appear throughout the city, fireworks go off daily at 2pm sharp (the *mascletà* – standing near it is a physical experience), and the streets fill with people in traditional dress. It’s spectacular and loud and chaotic. Book accommodation months in advance if you’re going during Fallas, and expect prices to double.
Everything is open. This isn’t shoulder season where half the city is shut – Valencia functions year-round. The Central Market, the City of Arts and Sciences, the beach bars (though nobody’s swimming). The paella culture is fully operational, and honestly, eating here in March without tourist-season crowds around you is one of the better restaurant experiences you can have.
Worth it? Absolutely, particularly for people who hate feeling like they’re on a conveyor belt of sightseeing. Families, couples, solo travellers who want to actually connect with a place rather than photograph it – March works well. If you need guaranteed sunshine and warmth, wait until May.
**Practical tip:** Book your Fallas accommodation now if that’s your window. Seriously, right now.
