# Formentera in May: Almost Perfect
May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Formentera, and I say that as someone who’s also been there in August and spent most of it fantasising about having the beach to myself.
The weather sits around 20°C, which sounds modest but feels lovely in practice. You’ll get warm, genuinely sunny days where the water looks every bit as absurdly turquoise as the photos promise. The rainfall figure of 8.5mm is basically nothing — a brief shower here and there, usually gone before you’ve finished being annoyed about it. It’s not reliably hot enough to spend eight hours horizontal on the sand, but for exploring the island by bike, eating long lunches outside, and actually swimming without it feeling like a personal challenge, it’s close to ideal.
Crowds are light by Formentera standards, which is a meaningful distinction. The island has very little capacity to absorb people gracefully, so “quiet” here is relative — but in May you can actually park a bike at Ses Illetes, find a spot on the beach without performing a military operation, and get a table at a decent restaurant without booking three weeks in advance. Most things are open by mid-May. Some of the smaller beach bars and rental places are just getting their act together in the first week or two, so early May has a slightly patchy, still-waking-up quality. By the third week, it’s properly functioning.
Is it worth it? Absolutely, if you’re someone who values atmosphere and headspace over guaranteed roasting heat. It suits couples, people who want to actually see the island rather than just occupy a patch of it, and anyone who has done high season Formentera and sworn never again.
If you want to lie in the sun doing nothing from dawn to dusk, you might find the temperatures occasionally underwhelming.
**Practical tip:** Bring one layer you’re genuinely happy wearing in the evenings. It cools down noticeably after sunset, and every restaurant terrace will expose you to that.
