# Cannes in August: Beautiful, Busy, and Absolutely Baking
Let’s be honest with you. Cannes in August is a lot. It’s gorgeous, the sea is the exact shade of blue that makes you question every life choice that kept you inland, and the restaurants are buzzing with energy. It’s also absolutely rammed with people, and you will not have La Croisette to yourself at any point. Ever. Not even at 7am.
The weather is reliably hot at around 28°C, which feels wonderful until you’ve walked fifteen minutes on sun-baked pavement looking for shade that doesn’t exist. Rain is minimal at roughly 16mm for the whole month, usually brief afternoon thunderstorms that actually provide welcome relief rather than ruining anything. Pack light clothes and sunscreen, not an umbrella.
Everything is open, which is genuinely one of August’s redeeming qualities. Unlike parts of France that quietly shut down in summer, Cannes leans into August hard. Restaurants, beach clubs, boat hire, shops on Rue d’Antibes – all of it is operating at full capacity. The Marché Forville morning market is brilliant for picking up local produce. The Îles de Lérins just offshore are absolutely worth the short ferry ride, though arrive early because that boat fills up fast.
Is it worth visiting? That genuinely depends on who you are. If you want a lively, social, see-and-be-seen Mediterranean summer experience, Cannes in August delivers completely. The atmosphere has real electricity. If you want quiet relaxation, wandering empty streets, and restaurant tables without reservations, you’re describing a different month entirely.
The Film Festival crowd has long gone by August, replaced by wealthy European vacationers, families, and a lot of Italian tourists who know their coastlines. It’s busy but not chaotic. Uncomfortable but not unbearable.
**One practical tip:** Book your beach club spot in advance. The free public beaches get genuinely unpleasant by 11am with barely room to put down a towel. Paying for a private beach bed sounds indulgent, but in August it’s basically just sensible planning.
